I was giving a presentation a few days ago and somebody raised their hand and asked me if Louisiana residents really need a will. It only a few seconds to answer that question and the answer is yes.
A couple of years ago I wrote a blog post titled, "24 Reasons Why Louisiana Residents Need a Will." One reason is to make sure you designate who is going to get your stuff when you die. A second reason is to make things a lot easier for your spouse if you're married in Louisiana. For example, if you don't have a will, your spouse can't sell your house after you die without getting the permission of others and your children. This is what we must do for our clients. We must educate them for the need to have a will, so loved one's are not left with a mess and family conflict. I have been an estates attorney for over 30 years and this issues never goes away and we see the families torn apart and pay additional monies that could be avoided with even a simple estate plan. So your message is a great one and it is being repeated in Philadelphia at least by one estates attorney. Hope this furher encourages your readers to get this most important task done immediately.

As far as I am concerned, everyone needs a will regardless of their marital status, income, or size of estate. You also need Powers of Attorney and a Living Will. And it is better to have these written sooner rather than later because you just never know when something is going to happen.
